SESSION D.4: (a) TRAINERS NOTES
STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT
KEY AREAS OF CONCERN
Objectives;
To review and prioritise key areas of concern.
To learn how to think strategically about management issues.
If your group has agreed a mission for your Community Radio station,
and you have developed an outline strategy for achieving your
key objectives, but how are you going to make sure that these
strategies are effectively implemented?
It is important to gain a sense of which areas of the stations
development and operation are likely to require the most careful
monitoring and control - either because success will be particularly
difficult to achieve or because failure would threaten the stationís
very existence.
Identifying the key areas for management concern and attention
will help you to:
You can suggest a family tree of possible areas of concern
- all will need some attention, but which are the areas that you
think will be critical for your radio station?
1. If you have used the problem tree session already with this
group, they will have an idea of how this works. (Although this
time they are being asked to be more managerial.)
2. Ask them to decide which areas will be most difficult or most
critical (make or break) for their radio station
(Colour these in red.)
3. Ask them to explain why each of the areas they have highlighted
is difficult or critical in what will be the consequences of unacceptable
performance in each?
4. Ask them to discuss how they will measure or judge performance
in each of the highlighted areas?
5. Also, who will be responsible for the day-to-day management
of each highlighted area?
6. Write and present a short report covering each of the questions
above (2 to 5)
