SESSION D.3: TRAINERS NOTES

EFFECTIVE COMMITTEES OF MANAGEMENT

Objectives:

To examine the many aspects of management of a community project.
To reflect on the attitudes and values necessary for effective community management.

For a complex community initiative to remain viable, it is crucial to establish a committee of management to operate the project. It must ensure that all aspects of the project are managed well in order to achieve the group's aims.

To do this effectively it must co-ordinate:

  • Forward planning,
  • Regular evaluation,
  • Internal and external communication,
  • Employment issues,
  • Legal responsibilities,
  • Insurance issues
  • Continuous training
  • Financial controls.
  • PLUS! Doing whatever it was set up to do. In this case, run a community media project, which entails:
  • Programme development.
  • Recruitment of volunteers
  • Liaison with regulators.
  • Technical aspects.
  • Libel insurance.
  • Premises.
  • Publicity/Promotion.
  • Sales/Other income
  • Listenership research.

(N.B. Don't offer this list to participants, stand at flip chart and ask for suggestions. Add in any that were missed.)

(As well as supplying slips with the topics, also distribute copies of the complete list for comparison.)

As the groups of two coalesce into larger groups, you should have sorted them into loose categories, based on the themes they have selected, for further discussion (e.g., finance, democratic ownership, technical, programming, fundraising, etc.)

Materials:
Slips with topics on them.
Writing paper/pens.
