SESSION D.1 (b) : EXERCISE NOTES

THE SOCIAL AUDIT TEAM

CUE NOTES FOR PARTICIPANTS

Shareholder
You have put some money into the project, either as a co-operative shareholder or as a member of a company limited by guarantee. You may want a small return on your investment, or seek a return in terms of satisfactory programmes and a say in the running of the project.

Volunteer
You are giving your time freely to the project because you believe in its community development potential or because you enjoy being on air. You wish to have a say in programme development and in station policies being developed.

Staff member
You are not that well paid, but understand that community media is always strapped for cash. You wish for job security, for training, consultation and good working conditions.

Advertiser/Sponsor
You have agreed to sponsor the community radio station because you believe that it is an important community resource and because it offers cost/effective advertising rates. You want the station to become better known and to build up its listenership.

Statutory Funder
You have been convinced that community media is seeking to place itself in the voluntary and community sector and is therefore entitled to be funded from the community development funds. You want them to increase their listenership, to broadcast more public service information and to train your client groups in media literacy.

Community Organisation
You have been trained to make your own programme but find it hard to get your members to take on this extra voluntary work. You want the station to do your broadcasting for you and to promote your project.

General Listener
You often listen to hear about local events. You are not too interested in all this talk of community development; it's just another radio station. You want more music, more sport and more (pick a favourite)

Use these cues as a starting point for developing a dialogue with the other stakeholders. Feel free to improvise by adding other topics that you consider relevant to the category you are representing. Try during this role-play dialogue to arrive at a situation where the interests of all stakeholders are satisfied.
