SESSION D.1 (a) : EXERCISES
SOCIAL AUDITS (THE MISSION STATEMENT)
One of the issues identified as important in setting a community
media group apart from other media operations, is its mission
statement.
This allows those involved to agree a set of operating principles,
which mark out clearly what they hope to achieve as a group.
This exercise asks you to discuss and agree a short range of
goals and values.
Some tips:
One-line bullet points (similar to this) are probably the most
effective way to achieve this.
Don't list all the things you plan to do, and who is to do them.
List instead, what you want to achieve.
To get you started try the following approach:
Each person writes down at least two goals, on separate pieces
of paper.
Spread all suggestions out on table. All walk around; anyone
who sees a slip they DISAGREE with turns it over.
Remove the slips that are left FACE-UP and write them up. These
are goals that everyone agrees with.
Now turn all the remaining slips face up again.
All walk around again, this time turn over the slips you AGREE
with.
Remove the slips that are left FACE-UP, and discard them, these
are missions nobody agrees with.
Write up the remaining slips (having added an appropriate affirmative
component.) as these are missions that some people in the group
support, and in a pluralist project some compromise is always
necessary.
To get you started, some suggestions are supplied. However, don't
just copy these onto the chart, use them as a stimulus to create
your own goals.
