SESSION C.2 : EXERCISES

CAPACITY BUILDING

During this session you will receive personalised technical training, particularly an introduction to the radio studio and its functions. However, apart from studio work, we wish you to include some team work exercises in your training.

Exercise 1.

Working in teams, identify a voluntary community organisation that has received scant media coverage. Decide with them that they could:

a) Use some publicity to increase membership. Gain more public recognition and support. Perhaps raise additional funds.

Or,

b) Encourage them to participate in a focus group with the aim of identifying how they could understand and use the media, to achieve any of the above aims.

a) Will involve your team in helping the community organisation to write a press release and in assisting them in getting it used by the media. If possible, accompanying them into a community radio station to 'get on air'.

b) Will involve your team in utilising facilitation skills to elicit a meaningful response and awareness from a community group about the utility of community media. And, if the group are willing, and the opportunity exists, to help them go on air and explain how they wish the media to assist a community media group.

---------------------------------------------------------

Exercise 2.

Will involve your team deciding on a community category, e.g., unemployed, disabled, cultural or environmental action groups, and in dialogue with that category, convincing the stations programming and administrative committees to organise a special 'Theme Week' around your identified category.

Should you decide on the latter exercise, relax, you won't be left on your own, most community stations are interested in doing this sort of exercise. If the station decides to go ahead, you, and your community category, should receive all the assistance you need to see the 'Special Week' to successful completion.

… You will be assessed on how well you worked as a team in convincing the selected group to participate, and your growing competence in working as a team in studio work.
