SESSION C.2 : TRAINER'S NOTES
CAPACITY BUILDING
Objective:
Introduction to main studio operations.
Introduction to community activism.
Introduction to the dynamism of teamwork.
The entire thrust of Participatory Learning is to provide a capacity
building dynamic to media studies. All of the exercises in these
Modules are designed to create a capacity in community members
to become analysts, self-directed, and agents of personal and
social change.
Most of the training should be based on real community problems,
identified by the participants. This particular Session asks the
group to put what they have learned into practice by making an
actual programme. You may need to start your group off with some
suggested headings, e.g. illiteracy, drugs, lone parents, refugees,
unemployment, or whatever social problems are dominant in your
community. Each exercise should place strong emphasis on problem-solving
and collective decision-making. Suggest that they make a one-hour
programme, to include perhaps, four-quarter hour segments researched,
recorded and presented by members of the group. If you have access
to a community radio station, arrange that it be broadcast when
ready. This will give extra spice to the groups efforts.
Significant time should be devoted to sharing experiences, good
and bad, amongst the group. This will help individual members
to develop confidence in analysing and finding solutions to local
problems. Sharing information, opinions and experiences with others
with different viewpoints is a powerful opportunity to gain new
perspectives, confidence in expressing oneself and experience
of the value of collective problem solving.
This particular exercise will require more time than most of
the other Sessions. You should introduce it early in the learning
process, perhaps as early as the second or third Module. This
will allow the group to do research, conduct interviews and edit
the necessary pieces. It will also allow you to introduce such
topics as 'Editing Reality' (Session C.3.)
and 'Making data informational' (Session B.2.(d))
in a more meaningful way.
To be effective, this Session needs to be accompanied by appropriate
access to an actual broadcast studio, so that real hands-on experience
can be gained.
Materials:
Ideally, a community radio station.
Or a recording studio.
