SESSION B.3 : EXERCISES (a and b)

MUSIC RADIO

(a) You can select one of the following exercises and record it for discussion later. All of these exercises should include relevant music, and should not be of more than five minutes duration.

  1. Provide a short researched piece about composer or singer.
  2. This will give you an opportunity to provide an informationally rich look at a certain artist.
  3. Use mood music to accompany a scene from a radio play.
  4. This will provide you with an opportunity to display your creative abilities.
  5. Develop a paradigmatic theme to link a series of public service announcements.
  6. This will afford you with space to show the 'framing' capacity of music.
  7. Present some music as an index for a piece of actuality or documentary.
  8. This will allow you to present music as part of the ordinary sound of the world.
  9. Any one of these will indicate the rich potential of music to enhance meaningful talk, and of the potential of adding 'associative' meanings to our musical output.

(b) This is an exercise that can be used on the night of the musical       reflection.

Break into two groups to discuss one of the two aspects of music.

'Music as Signifier', or 'Music as Commodity'.

Each group will reflect, discuss and write up their conclusions on flip chart paper for presentation to the other group after about 30 minutes debate.

Select one of your group to record your conclusions and another to present it.
