SESSION B.2 (c) : EXERCISE.

 WRITING FOR SOCIAL ACTION BROADCASTING

Use the supplied media text, or write about an issue you are familiar with, to create a short piece of 'Explanatory Journalism', that is, you should attempt to go behind the immediate story, to offer context, to get an emotional reaction and to pose the question, 'what are you going to do about this issue?

This is a complex writing skill and is new to most media; don't expect to achieve it entirely during this session. The important thing is for you to understand the concept. (The AHA! Principle.) Not necessarily to write a finished piece today, although that would be nice.

The format:

  • Use the supplied text, or your own experiences, to construct a report     for a radio programme.
  • Add background information, even if you make it up.
  • Add emotional texture, fictional if necessary, and finally
  • Ask implicitly, or explicitly 'what are you going to do about this issue?'

  • Read your finished copy to the group for discussion.
