SESSION E:5. EXERCISE
ACCESS ALL AREAS
CREATING ACCESS OPPORTUNITIES
As a group seeking to devise the best way to provide equal access
for all within the broadcast area, you will need to do two things:
1. Identify the spectrum of organisations within your
area, who could avail of this access opportunity, from well organised,
almost certain to use it, to poorly organised, wonít use
the station without encouragement, and
2. Suggest some proactive policies, or initiatives to
ensure that all can avail in equal measure of the radio service.
One suggested way to go about this is, firstly, list as many
of the organisations within your areas, as you are aware of. On
a sheet of paper provided, draw a rough layout of the general
area. Locate the radio station premises and then locate the identified
groups in roughly their geographic location. Colour them in so
as to grade them in terms
of likelihood to use the service. Levels of funding and organisational
abilities should be considered. Track record with achieving publicity
and advocacy initiatives should also be an issue. Geographical
distance may also be a factor.
Use a colour system to identify those most likely to respond
to your access overtures. Red not likely, blue somewhat likely,
green very likely.
(This is just one suggested way; you may devise a method more
suited to the group.)
Try then, above each identified group on the map, to offer suggestions
on ways and means to encourage them to access the radio station
and avail of its broadcast opportunities.
Present the your graph to the wider group for discussion.
