NEAR90fm is Community Radio for the North East of Dublin.
The station was originally part of the Independent Radio and Television Commissions
pilot in Community Radio and in 1995 was awared an 18 month licence. This pilot proved very successful and a 5 year license was subsequently awarded. In 2007 the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) awarded NEARfm a 10 year licence.
NEAR90fm is run by the Dublin North-East Community
Communications Co-operative Society Limited , a registered non-profit making Co-operative
Society.
The NEAR Media Co-op also runs NEARtv Productions which provides community television content to Dublin City Community Television (DCTV) and NEARonline which provides IT and Internet training to community groups and individuals.
The Co-operative is managed by the Committee of Management, elected at
the Annual General Meeting. Shareholding is open to anyone subscribing
to the aims to the Co-op and a single share of €5.
Currently broadcasting from Monday to Sunday from 8am to midnight,
the station has over 130 volunteers. These are drawn from both individuals
and groups from our catchment area. Our membership is open to all members
of the community whom we facilitate and train to produce their own
radio programmes.
